Your Hair IS Growing! Here’s Why It Feels Like It’s Not (And How to Fix It)

by Kendra, your Holistic Hair Hype-Woman

Have you ever stared at your reflection, side-eyed your edges, and thought,
“Now why is my hair out here acting like this!”

Like, no matter what oil you slather on, what deep conditioner you whisper sweet nothings to—your hair just will not grow?

Welp. I’m here to bust that myth wide open.

🗣 Your hair IS growing. You just don’t know where it’s going.
Let’s talk about it—and more importantly, let’s FIX it. Because that “my hair doesn’t grow” narrative? We’re throwing that out like expired edge control.

The Hair Growth Cycle, Explained (Without the Science Overwhelm)

Your hair isn’t being disrespectful. It’s following a schedule—a whole four-phase process that’s lowkey more organized than some of our lives. 🙃 And when you understand this cycle, you stop panicking every time you see shedding in the shower. You stop blaming your hair for things that are actually fixable. And you start working with your body—not against it.

Phase 1: Anagen – The Growth Phase (aka Main Character Energy 🎬)

This is your hair’s “It Girl” moment.
It’s flourishing. It’s getting inches. It’s collecting compliments like rewards points.
Most of your hair—around 85-90%—is in this phase right now. It can last anywhere from 2 to 7 years depending on your genetics, nutrition, health, and hair habits.

But here’s the catch: if your Anagen phase is short—whether from genetics or poor care—your hair doesn't get a chance to reach longer lengths before it starts the next phase.

That’s why someone else’s hair seems to touch their waist while yours chills at the back of your neck. It’s not magic. It’s science…and strategy.

🎯 Want to know how to extend this phase so you can see real growth? That’s the kind of game I teach inside my Hair Rehab Course. We focus on nourishing your follicles, healing your scalp, and creating a system that keeps your hair growing longer and stronger—consistently.

Phase 2: Catagen – The Situationship Phase 💔

Whew. This is the awkward phase.
Your hair isn’t growing. It’s not shedding. It’s just...existing.
Kinda like texting “wyd” at midnight with no intention of following through.

During this 10–14 day period, your hair is preparing to transition. The follicle detaches from the blood supply and starts shrinking—literally packing its bags like it’s moving out.

Most people don’t notice this phase, but if your hair gets stuck here (due to stress, hormones, or illness), you’ll start noticing thinning and stalled progress.

🙅🏽‍♀️ Can you stop this phase? Nope.
Can you support your scalp so the transition stays smooth and timely? Absolutely.
Stress management, scalp care, and solid nutrition can keep things flowing and follicles thriving.

Phase 3: Telogen – The Lazy Phase 😴

Okay, picture this:
Your hair puts on its fuzzy robe, grabs a glass of wine, and says,
“I need a break, sis.”
That’s Telogen. The “I’m not doing a thing” phase that lasts 3–4 months.

Your strands are chilling. Not growing, not falling. Just vibing.

Here’s where things get tricky:
If too many strands enter Telogen at once, it causes something called Telogen Effluvium—and that’s when you start shedding like crazy.

🧠 Think of it like your job:

    • Anagen is when you’re clocked in, working hard.
    • Catagen is your two-week notice.
    • Telogen is that coworker who shows up, does nothing, and still gets paid.

If everyone on the team decides to do that? The business falls apart. Same with your scalp. If too many strands check out at once, your hair volume drops FAST.

Phase 4: Exogen – The “Bye, Felicia” Phase 👋🏽

This is the part where your hair leaves. Shedding happens. The cycle restarts.

Now let’s be crystal clear:
Shedding is NORMAL.
If there’s a white bulb at the end? It’s just a strand completing its cycle.
Breakage is another story—those short, broken, uneven strands? That’s damage, not part of the plan.

⚠️ But if you’re shedding more than 100 hairs a day, or your parts are widening, or your pillow looks like it’s wearing a wig…something’s off.

Stress. Diet. Hormones. Even emotional trauma (yes, breakups can snatch your edges 😩) can send too many hairs into this phase too early. And if the new growth doesn’t come in fast enough? You’re left with thinning, frustration, and confusion.

So Why Does It Feel Like Your Hair Isn’t Growing?

Now that we’ve walked through the phases, here’s the real tea:
Most women over 40—especially those navigating hormonal changes, chronic stress, or past damage—are stuck in the wrong phase of the cycle.

And that’s why your hair feels stuck at the same length or is thinning out, even when you’re doing “everything right.”

The Common Culprits:

🔥 Too Much Shedding – Your strands are leaving too soon.

🔥 Short Anagen Phase – Your hair isn’t getting enough “main character” time to thrive.

🔥 Breakage – You’re growing hair, but it’s breaking off before you see the progress.

🔥 Scalp Issues – Inflammation, buildup, or poor circulation are blocking new growth.

🙌🏽 BUT HERE’S THE GOOD NEWS: You don’t have to stay stuck.
